Athird-generation family-run business, C.T. Smith Co. bridges the gap from the farmer to the packager. We are originators and multipliers of cowpeas, otherwise known as Southern peas, to the food and seed trade. All our products go over an air screen cleaner, gravity table, destoner, and magnets. We pack into 2,200-pound Super Sacks or 50-pound bags on pallets and fumigate monthly to keep our product free of pests. We offer special processing and warehousing for other commodities, please contact us for more information on our services.
Peas Inc., dba C.T. Smith Co. specializes in dry edible cowpeas, better known as the “Southern pea” for the wholesale seed and food trade. We contract with farmers all over the Southwest and take pride in dealing solely in cowpeas. We contract over 20 varieties, some of which are heirloom varieties, all GMO free, each one delicious and unique to itself. With each year passing, purity waivers and growth habits can change. We assume responsibility to keeping cowpea seed pure and keeping a tight grip on as many varieties as possible. We have invested in a small plot research program that allows us to rogue through impure seed, study growth habits and investigate promising varieties lost throughout the years. Here at C.T. Smith Co. we eat, drink and sleep cowpea!

Carl T. Smith III
CHAIRMAN
Carl T. Smith III is the son of founder C.T. Smith Jr. Carl was born in New Orleans, Lousiana on February 15,1955. He married Beverly Marie Summers in August of 1977 and had three children, Leah, Tasso, and Brooke. Carl and Beverly (Missi) moved to San Antonio, Texas in May of 1984 to join Peas Inc. dba C.T. Smith Co. He served as President and Owner for 41 years until turning over the reins to his daughter Brooke Smith-Balli and her husband Jose Balli. He acts as a consultant and enjoys spending time with family, fishing, and playing guitar.

Brooke Smith-Balli is the youngest child of Carl T. Smith III and proud successor of the family business. She stepped into her role as President at C.T. Smith Co. after leaving a 16-year career in the restaurant business. Finding meaning in working with food, Brooke is eager to continue her life’s work in a new sector of the industry alongside her father and husband.
Jose Balli
Vice President
Jose Balli is the Vice President and Production Manager of C.T Smith Co. with over seven years of hands-on agricultural and field production experience. Working directly with farmers across Texas, he specializes in black-eyed peas, cowpeas, and specialty seed production with a strong focus on quality and long-term relationships. Rooted in family values and rural tradition, Jose is the husband of Brooke Smith-Balli and son-in-law of Carl T. Smith III, carrying forward a deep commitment to agriculture, integrity, and community.
Susan Netardus
Office Manager
Susan Netardus is a graduate of Southwest Texas State University (Texas State University) with a Bachelor of Business Administration. After graduating, Susan worked for 10 years with the State of Texas Antitrust / Consumer Protection Division as a legal secretary and office manager. Following her time with the state of Texas, Susan worked with Priority Personnel as the Account/Payroll Manager. And in 2003 she landed at C.T. Smith Co. With over twenty years spent at C.T., Susan has worn many hats, including but not limited to office management, payroll, AP, AR, freight coordination, and food safety & quality assurance.

Joe Grollimund has been a dedicated Plant Manager with C.T. Smith Co. since 2006, bringing over 20 years of leadership, experience, and commitment to the company’s operations. Known for his strong work ethic and attention to detail, Joe cares deeply about every aspect of the business and the people who make it successful. He is respected by both staff and colleagues for his reliability, integrity, and hands-on approach. A hard-working family man and valued member of the community, Joe takes pride in supporting those around him every day.
